Richard Heinberg assesses the Copenhagen climate conference

It is worse than Heinberg’s essay. My son, the Ph.D. meteorologist working for Naval Research Labs in Monterey insisted on my watching

Global Dimming

Taking into account aerosol particulate pollution and its effects on cloud structure and reflectivity, Naval climate scientists have solved the conumdrum of increasing ocean temperatures and apparent decreasing atmospheric temperatures. Evidently, suddenly decreasing particulate matter suspended in the atmosphere would be catastrophic in view of the newest research, which is not yet unclassified. It is a “Catch-22″ situation, where the effect of CO_2 levels appear to be nonlinear, have been grossly underestimated, have a long lifetime in the atmosphere, and particulate pollution’s accurate effects on cloud formation and albedo have been ignored.

We are in a lull of sunspot activity, which is predicted to increase in coming years, raising total solar influx. Results of all the conclusions are in a Top Secret report I have not seen but the president and his staff have seen for at least six months. Obama knew the results months ago. I can only guess what is in the report and can discuss it with anyone, in person. In a certain way, I believe the president’s hands were tied in Copenhagen, in many ways. We either run along the road to oblivion, hoping for a solution, or do something as stupid as what we have been doing for the last 200 years and risk being crushed by that boulder rolling downhill toward us.

As a scientist, it seems to me the gathering on the horizon of a perfect ecological, fiscal, and psychological storm. It remains to be seen if we can either avoid it or endure it. This should not deter us from thinking of how to establish a sustainable steady-state world.
