“When Cuba lost access to Soviet oil in the early 1990’s, the country faced an immediate crisis–feeding the population–and an ongoing challenge: how to create a low-energy society. Cuba transitioned from large, fossil-fuel intensive farming to small, less energy-intensive organic farms and urban gardens, and from a highly industrial society to a significantly more sustainable one. The film tells the story of the Cuban people’s hardship, ingenuity and triumph over sudden adversity—through cooperation, conservation and community, told in their own words. As the world approaches peak oil, Cuba provides a valuable example of how to successfully address the challenge.” ”…and how it did so is one of the most important and hopeful stories of the past few decades. It is a story not just of individual achievement but of the collective mobilization of an entire society to meet an enormous challenge.”

SPEAKER: One of the great things that came out of Cuba ’s new system of agriculture was a focus on fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet, more readily available to all. We are privileged to have Bryn Mawr-based Dr. Ana Negron speak after the film, to tell us of her travels to see these communities in Cuba and how she informs her own patients here about the huge health benefits of eating fresh, organic, real food. See also Dr. Negron’s website: www.greensonabudget.org. We’ll have a tasting of some of her home-grown recipes and listen to some gorgeous Cuban tunes from the CD Buena Vista Social Club.

Come at 7PM for light refreshments. The screening begins promptly at 7:30 PM. We are asking for a $7 donation for the evening…no one is turned away at the door. Dr. Negron will speak at 8:30 PM, with a discussion afterward. Many thanks to Common Ground member Dagmar Holl for recommending this film and introducing us to Dr. Negron.
