Global Water Tool

The WBCSD has updated its Global Water Tool with more recent water datasets, due to its successful uptake since its launch in August 2007, as well as the increasing media attention around managing corporate water use.

The Global Water Tool is a free and easy-to-use tool for companies and organizations to map their water use and assess risks relative to their global operations and supply chains. The tool, which was developed by CH2M HILL and an advisory board of 22 WBCSD member companies, aims to help corporations better manage their water use. It is downloadable from www.wbcsd.org/web/watertool.htm.

The Global Water Tool allows companies to quickly and accurately answer such key questions as:

  • How many of our sites are in extremely water-scarce areas? Which sites are at greatest risk? How will that look in the future?
  • How many of our employees live in countries that lack access to improved water and sanitation?
  • How many of our suppliers are in water-scarce areas now? How many will be in 2025?

The updates for the new version include more recent data from WHO and UNICEF on access to water and sanitation, and from FAO AQUASTAT, such as total renewable water resources per capita, dependency ratio, and industrial water withdrawal as part of total. The version also includes a more complete Frequently Asked Questions section, and users of the original version can easily transfer their inventory into the new Excel file.
