Ask Senator Specter about climate at Drexel University town hall

April 13, 2009
2:00 pmto4:00 pm

Our friends at Focus the Nation have just informed us that Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) is confirmed to attend their town hall event at Drexel University in Philadelphia on Monday, April 13. Senator Specter continues to be especially influential in the climate debate. Please attend the town hall on Monday and urge him to support strong, science-based climate legislation.

With Congress poised to consider climate and energy legislation, we have a tremendous opportunity to protect future generations from the worst effects of global warming while breaking our dependence on oil and putting Americans back to work.

Although Senator Specter has called for congressional action on global warming, he insists on limiting the price polluters pay for the heat-trapping emissions they produce. This price limit would prevent critical investment in clean energy technologies and yield insufficient pollution cuts. Please attend the town hall this coming Monday and ask Senator Specter to reject dangerous loopholes that would undermine the effectiveness of climate legislation. A sample question that you can ask is below.

Sample Question:
Although you have called for congressional action on global warming, your support for a cap on the price of pollution allowances could prevent needed investment in clean energy technologies and yield insufficient emissions cuts. Will you support legislation that excludes such a price cap and requires science-based emissions reductions of 35 percent by 2020 and at least 80 percent by 2050?
