Rick Ray, Chairman of the Marple Tree Committee, will give a presentation on the correct way to plant a tree or shrub. He will illustrate the correct method of planting, staking, mulching, watering and aftercare. Following up with some examples of products and situations that have gone bad.
The key to successful tree and shrub planting is making sure that plants are not planted too deeply. Many nurseries are selling trees and shrubs that are buried under too much soil in their pots or over their root balls. Homeowners then dig holes that are too deep, and pile on too much mulch when the job is done.
Mr. Ray has taught in the Department of Landscape Horticulture at Temple – Ambler and retired relatively recently from Department of Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design at Delaware Valley College where he taught courses in Landscape Techniques. Plant Propagation and Woody and Herbaceous Plant Identification and Culture. He has been an Adjunct Professor of the Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation for the last 20 years.
Sponsored by: the Marple Library; Chester Ridley Crum Watershed Association; Marple Environmental Advisory Board; and Marple Tree committee.
